"Blush" was a big sonic expansion for me. It’s a pretty spare Lazerbeak beat that features a distorted guitar sample, leaning further into to a rock palate that I had before. Lyrically, it’s got a few styley moments, but it stays mostly earnest--which is also seldom traveled terrain for me. The song asks how much is too much to give up for someone else? When does compromise become self-sacrificing? I wrote the chorus in Puerto Rico, but recorded it in Andy Thompson’s studio Instrument Landing. While I sat on futon behind him, he added that little turn in the bass line in the last refrain that just breaks my heart every time—so good.
